On May 22, 2014, The TASA Group in conjunction with maritime expert, David Smith presented a free, one-hour, interactive webinar presentation, A Check List for Investigating/Understanding What Went Wrong in Boat Deaths/Accidents for all legal professionals.

This webinar was designed to provide the attorney with the most recent information about current investigations of boating deaths and accidents for when they are handling these types of cases. The following topics were covered:

  • The basic causes of boating accidents
  • Where to find information about boating accidents from State, Federal and other sources
  • Boating accident scenarios examined through aspects of engineering and materials
  • Expanded definitions of behavioral factors, as well as examination of accident populations by time, place, age of participants, activities, areas and type of vessels involved

About the Presenter

Commander David Smith holds a PhD in Education from St. Louis University and a B.S. in Naval Science from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.  He has 33 years of experience in litigation cases that involve boat collisions (Jet Skis); drowning accidents; diving injuries in pools; cervical spine injuries on boats, and injuries from above and in-ground pools, as well as at beaches.

Dr. Smith has also reviewed accidents involving diving from boats; pool/beach design and construction; water skiing and tubing; white water rafting, as well as many other types of aquatic accidents.  He has been retained or consulted in over 600 cases involving aquatics, boating or Jones Act litigation.
