Pitfalls in Construction Contracts

On Tuesday, January 26, 2010, The TASA Group, Inc., in conjunction with architect/engineer Robert Illo, presented a one-hour, interactive webinar on construction contracts.

This presentation covered a brief overview of current delivery methods for construction projects. Focusing on the design-bid delivery paradigm, architect and engineer Robert Illo, AIA, PE outlined five common pitfalls in the execution of construction contracts and present methods for managing the risks associated with these pitfalls. Current trends in the construction field and their effect on liability were discussed.

Additionally, Mr. Illo covered how to spot areas of weakness and potential liability for owner, contractor and design professional associated with the delivery of a construction project. Attendees obtained insight regarding specific provisions in construction contracts that go beyond the standard language. This discussion will help you to both prevent and identify failures in the construction contract.

Mr. Illo answered questions about specific contract conflict points and offered examples from his 25 years of experience preparing contract documents and administering construction contracts for projects in commercial, industrial, residential, educational, recreational and institutional sectors.



About the Expert

Robert J. Illo, AIA, PE is principal architect and engineer for architecture + engineering innovations (a+ei) located in Mountville, near Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Mr. Illo holds an architectural license in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Massachusetts, Indiana, Ohio, Mississippi, Louisiana, New Hampshire and Texas. He holds licensure as a civil/structural engineer in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Indiana, Massachusetts, Ohio and Mississippi.

Mr. Illo has 25 years of experience in architecture, engineering, forensic evaluation and restoration services for residential, commercial, industrial and public property design. He has been called as an expert advisor and witness in numerous property safety and construction litigation cases, serving plaintiff’s counsel, defense counsel and insurance companies. He continues to provide accurate forensic evaluation and remediation measures in matters involving the built environment. Mr. Illo is a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, National Society of Professional Engineers, National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, as well as The American Institute of Architects. He holds a Master of Engineering and Bachelor of Architectural Engineering from Pennsylvania State University and a Bachelor of Architecture from Drexel University.
